Farming Our Animals

Chickens
We keep three different kinds of chickens at Pennypack Farm - laying hens, broilers and a bantam flock.

Our laying hens lay brown eggs that are sold to our CSA members.  We typically order 200 or more hens in the winter and get them settled in at the farm in the early spring. The hens then spend most of their time outside in a fenced in area, going inside the egg-mobiles at night to roost.  These egg-mobiles also have nest boxes for the hens to lay eggs in.  The hens are moved every couple of weeks to fresh grass. Their diet consists of an organic feed supplemented by waste produce and grass.

We usually have 5 batches of broiler chickens each season at the farm. We buy these as chicks and keep them for 9 to 10 weeks until they are about 4-5 pounds and then they go to our processor in Lancaster County.  The broilers are then sold to our CSA members.  They eat an organic feed and also feed on fresh grass.

The bantams are the small chickens you see running around the "barnyard" area behind the greenhouse. They are purely for educational purposes, allowing children (and adults) to see chickens up close.

Turkeys
Each summer, we begin raising turkeys for the Thanksgiving and holiday season. In the past, we have raised both heritage breed turkeys and the larger production breeds here at the farm. Turkeys are started in June or July so that they can attain an optimal weight by the third week of November. Our turkeys are raised on pasture and eat the same organic feed as do the broiler chickens, which is supplemented with waste produce and grass.
