Better run out and get that soil sample before the ground freezes!
Well, the ground is not frozen at the moment, so if you have not taken a soil sample yet, now would be the time. Here is a helpful video that demonstrates the dos and dont's of collecting your sample.
Tip # 1: Use a clean, non galvanized trowel, and a clean bucket.
Tip # 2: Take multiple samples and mix together, remove any large debris. Let dry. Remember more surface area will allow it to dry more quickly, but make sure your chosen surface wont contaminate the sample. Penn State reccommends drying on newspaper overnight. Take 1 cup of that sample and send it in with your submission form and payment.
Penn State can run your soil test. Follow the link for "sample submission forms." I chose the form that includes "Home Garden" and selected "mixed vegetables" as the crop code, but you may have other goals.
