Self Guided Trail
Visit the farm and learn on your own time. Follow our interpretive trail and learn what keeps your farm running. Informational signs posted at various locations key you in to the "nuts and bolts" of a working sustainable farm. Stations include: irrigation, pest control, solar energy, laying hens, beekeeping, and season extension. Each sign has a Kid Fact so bring the family along and learn together.
The self-guided trail:
In early 2009, employees of Merck, called Champions of the Environment, led by CSA farm members Jonathan Strickland and Tom Steinmetz, applied for and acquired a grant to design and erect a self-guided trail that they and additional volunteers established in June 2009. Thirty signs are located through out the farm now and a few on the outskirts of the property about bees and composting. Each sign imparts an ecological farming practice that increases soil fertility and ecosystem biodiversity every year while controlling weeds and pests without chemicals. Also, the purpose of each structure on the farm is explained. A sample of topics includes: cover crops, black plastic mulch, drip irrigation, greenhouse season extension, movable pastured chicken coops, deer fencing, solar panels, and much more. The trail is used by College Settlement campers who tour the farm to learn about Pennsylvania State Environment and Ecology concepts on Agriculture such as Integrated Pest Management. Classes on field trips, scout groups, and drop-by visitors also use the trail to understand what they are seeing as they mosey throughout the farm.
