Locavore Resources

What is the locavore movement?

The locavore movement is a growing effort by individuals and groups to source and eat much of their food from local sources. Most "locavores" try to locate food sources within a 100 or 150 mile radius and consume as much from these sources as possible.

This can be difficult, however, as most of our food systems are not set up to accommodate locavore interests.  Usually, the locavore must conduct a bit of research and obtain foods from a mix of local sources including CSAs, farmers markets, farms and farm stands, buying clubs, co-ops and in recent years many supermarkets have increased their local food offerings.

But perhaps the most difficult challenge facing the prospective locavore is the change of diet.  Eating seasonally means reducing or eliminating tropical fruits and nuts, summer produce in the winter months, most processed and packaged products and just about anything else that is not produced in the 100 or 150 mile radius.
